McClendon ran for the Alabama Senate to unseat a 4-term Independent Senator. Because the incumbent was financed by the state’s powerful teachers union, McClendon was outspent 2-to-1. Trailing by 40 points in the early polls, McClendon lost the election by fewer than 700 votes. Coming back from that much of a percentage is almost unheard of but shows what creativity can do when the odds are stacked against you.
